Solvent-based or solventless?

Solvent-based concentrates use butane, propane, ethanol or CO₂ to strip the resin from the plant, then remove the solvent with heat and vacuum. Quality depends on how well the solvent is purged, which is why a lab certificate showing residual solvents matters. Solventless concentrates use only heat, pressure, water, ice or mechanical sieving; they are generally seen as the premium tier, but heat and pressure can drive off delicate terpenes.

How strong are they?

Flower commonly tests at 15–30% THC. Concentrates commonly range from roughly 60% to 90%, with isolates and crystalline THCA near 100%, although sources disagree on each type and kief and hash tend to sit lower, around 50–80%. The names mostly describe texture and method, not strength, so only the lab result for the batch is reliable. Health Canada advises that new or occasional users avoid extracts because of the greater risk of serious adverse effects.

Dosing and safety

  • A common starting amount is about the size of a grain of rice, and effects of dabbed or vaporized concentrates can arrive within minutes — wait before taking more.
  • Do not make butane extracts at home: flammable solvents cause serious burns and fires.
  • Let hot glass, nails and chambers cool completely before touching them, and keep flames away from flammables.
