Disposable vapes or cartridges?

Disposable vapes are all-in-one: the battery and the oil are built in, so there is nothing to buy or fill. Cartridges screw onto a separate 510-thread battery, so you keep the battery and swap cartridges. Check the size (in grams or millilitres) and the strain or flavour on each page.

How long does a vape last?

Vendor estimates put a 1 g cartridge at roughly 150–300 puffs of about three seconds, and a half-gram cartridge at roughly 75–150, depending on how hard you draw and how hot the device runs. Light users can stretch a cartridge over weeks; heavy users may finish one in days. Higher heat burns oil faster. These are rough figures, not guarantees.

Safety: what to know about vape oil

• Vitamin E acetate. This thickener was found in the lung fluid of all 29 patients tested in the 2019 US outbreak of vaping-related lung injury (EVALI), and in about two-thirds of the cannabis-containing fluids tested in one New York State study of cartridges linked to early cases. The CDC says the evidence does not rule out other chemicals. Canada’s rules for licensed vape products prohibit it, and you cannot tell by looking at a cartridge whether it is present, so ask for a lab certificate where available.
• Packaging. Convincing fake packaging is common in the illicit market; cartoon-style labels are a red flag, since licensed products cannot be marketed to young people.
• Do not modify or add anything to a cartridge you buy.
• Symptoms. Seek medical care promptly if vaping is followed by cough, shortness of breath, chest pain or fever.

Batteries and heat

A lower heat setting keeps flavour and avoids burning the oil. Charge batteries with the cable that came with them and stop using one that swells or overheats. If you want to vape an extract you already have, see distillate. Store vapes upright at room temperature, away from children. You must be of legal age in your province: 19 in most of Canada, 18 in Alberta and 21 in Quebec.
