What a hybrid is

A hybrid is a cross of indica and sativa parents. Some lean one way, some sit in the middle, and the best way to tell is the parentage and aroma on each strain page. Most strains sold today are hybrids, including Blue Dream, Wedding Cake, Gorilla Glue #4 and Sundae Driver.

Choosing a hybrid

Look at the dominant side (for example “sativa-leaning hybrid”), then at the aroma: citrus and pine usually go with a brighter profile, earth, vanilla and grape with a heavier one. The label is a hint, not a promise: a 2021 Nature Plants study found that two products sold under the same strain name were often as different as products with different names, so the aroma of the actual batch is the best check. Compare grades (AAAA, AAA, AA) and price per gram.

How to read a hybrid listing

Phrases such as “sativa-dominant hybrid”, “indica-leaning” or “balanced 50/50” are estimates, and sources differ: for example, Wedding Crasher is listed as roughly 60% indica and 40% sativa by one seed company and as predominantly indica by another. Treat the ratio as a hint about aroma and structure, and look at the terpene notes and, where you can, the lab report for the batch.

Before you buy a hybrid

  • Is the aroma what you want — sweet and creamy, fuel and pine, or fruity and bright?
  • Do the grade and the size make sense for the price per gram?
  • Is there a lab certificate for the batch, or at least a reported THC range for the strain?

Using and storing hybrid flower

Start with a small amount and give it time. Keep flower in an airtight glass jar, cool and dark. You must be of legal age in your province: 19 in most of Canada, 18 in Alberta and 21 in Quebec.

FAQ: Hybrid

What is a hybrid strain?
A hybrid is a cross of indica and sativa genetics. It can lean either way or be balanced, which is why the parentage on the strain page matters.
Are hybrids a good first choice?
Many shoppers like balanced hybrids because they avoid extremes, but start with a small amount whatever the strain type.
What are popular hybrid strains?
Blue Dream, Wedding Cake, Gorilla Glue #4, Sundae Driver and Pineapple Express are among the most searched hybrids.
How do I know which way a hybrid leans?
The strain page states whether it is indica-leaning, sativa-leaning or balanced, with the commonly cited parents.
Do two bags of the same strain smell the same?
Not always. Research found that products sold under the same strain name can differ a lot, so judge each batch by its aroma and lab report.
