Type, aroma and THC ranges come from public strain references and the partner listing; they are not lab results for a specific batch.

What is shatter?

Shatter is a translucent, brittle concentrate made by extracting cannabis resin with a solvent — commonly butane, propane or ethanol — and purging the solvent out carefully. At room temperature it is hard enough to snap like glass, which gives it its name. It is usually dabbed or vaporized, and potency is commonly quoted between about 70% and 90% THC, although sources disagree and the lab result for the batch is the only reliable number.

Shatter, wax, budder, sauce and diamonds

FormWhat it is
ShatterBrittle and glass-like; easy to see through, harder to portion and awkward in vape pens
Budder, crumble, waxThe same family of extract with a whipped, crumbly or opaque texture that is easier to handle
Sauce and diamondsTerpene-rich sauce around crystalline THCA; the most flavourful and often a little lower in total THC because much of it has crystallised
Live resinMade from fresh-frozen plant for a richer terpene profile

Choosing shatter

Shatter is sold by strain name, so the strain page shows the genetics and the aroma notes people report — for example Wedding Cake, Gelato or Blue Dream. Extraction changes flavour, so a shatter may taste different from the flower. Look for an even, clear amber colour and ask for a lab certificate; for solvent-based products a residual-solvent result matters.

Using shatter safely

  • Start with a very small piece — about a grain of rice is a common first amount — and wait before taking more.
  • Dab temperatures quoted by guides vary widely, from about 300–350°F for delicate concentrates to 500–600°F on a traditional nail. Too cool vaporizes poorly; too hot can burn the material. A thermometer or temperature-controlled rig helps.
  • Let the nail or banger cool before you touch it, and keep flames away from flammables.
  • Health Canada advises that new or occasional users avoid extracts because of the greater risk of serious adverse effects.

Storing shatter

Store it airtight in a cool, dark place — warmth makes shatter soften and stick, and light degrades it. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. You must be of legal age in your province: 19 in most of Canada, 18 in Alberta and 21 in Quebec.

FAQ: Shatter

What is shatter?
Shatter is a glass-like concentrate made by extracting cannabis resin with a solvent. It is very potent and usually dabbed or vaporized.
Why is it called shatter?
At room temperature it is hard and brittle and can break into shards, like glass.
What is the difference between shatter and live resin?
Shatter is usually made from dried, cured cannabis and is clear and brittle. Live resin is made from fresh-frozen plants to preserve more terpenes, and is often softer and more flavourful.
What is the difference between shatter and wax?
They are the same kind of extract with a different texture. Shatter is clear and brittle, wax is opaque, soft and easier to portion.
How much shatter should I use?
A very small piece, about a grain of rice, and then wait. Shatter is much stronger than flower, and Health Canada advises new or occasional users to avoid extracts.
How should I store shatter?
Airtight, in a cool, dark place. Warmth makes it soften and stick.
