Saanich is a beautiful municipality located in British Columbia, Canada. As part of Greater Victoria, Saanich sits south of downtown Victoria and north of View Royal and Langford. With a population of 114,148 as of the 2016 census, it is the most populous municipality in the Capital Regional District and on Vancouver Island, making it the eighth-most populous municipality in the province.
The District of Saanich was officially incorporated on March 1, 1906. It later separated from the District and became its own Municipality on December 7, 1988. The name “Saanich” comes from the Coast Salish name for the area, Tsartlip.
The first inhabitants of this area were the Coast Salish people who settled here over 4,000 years ago. They thrived off of the abundant resources found in both land and sea.
European settlers were drawn to Saanich for its fertile soils and mild climate. In 1858, James Douglas established a farm at Brentwood Bay (now part of Saanich) while also creating Old West Saanich Road which connected his farm to Victoria.
As Victoria’s industry grew in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Saanich became a popular residential area for wealthy businessmen and professionals. Many grand homes were built during this time and some still stand today. The arrival of the railroad in 1906 brought even more growth to this already thriving community.
Today, Saanich is a dynamic community with over 110,000 residents. It boasts numerous parks and recreational areas as well as a variety of businesses and industries. The people of Saanich take great pride in their community and work together to ensure it remains an exceptional place to live, work, and play.
Welcome to the Vibrant City of Saanich
Experience the unique charm and progressive mindset of Saanich, the first municipality in Canada to officially endorse cannabis legalization in 2017. The city council unanimously voted in favor of a resolution urging the Canadian government to legalize and regulate cannabis, in response to the rise of illegal dispensaries within city limits.
Since then, other municipalities have followed suit, but there is still opposition at both the local and provincial levels. As Canada moves closer towards legalizing recreational cannabis by July 2018, Saanich remains at the forefront of this important issue.
