Pot brownies and the legendary, astronomical, space cake have long dominated the world of edibles. But if you’ve ever sat in an Amsterdam coffeeshop and attempted to down one of those pre-wrapped space cakes/bricks from unknown origin, you may wonder why bother?
The good news is that making a cake — including one that will get you high — is really simple, and the final product is virtually guaranteed to be superior than store-bought baked dough lumps. Here’s how to combine cannabis with baking to create a dessert.

Why should I bake a weed cake and not just smoke a joint?
If you usually use marijuana by smoking a joint and experiencing the THC hit almost instantly, you may wonder why bother with the trouble of making edibles. This makes sense, especially when you consider how long it takes to feel the effects of weed edibles and how long it can take for the high to wear off.
Edibles aren’t intended to take the place of joints, and the experiences are not comparable. Edibles provide a distinct high that is different from smoking and may be an excellent change of pace. They can also be a fun way to surprise guests or give the ideal gift for someone who isn’t a fan of smoking but enjoys cannabis.
Is a healthy food treat a good everyday indulgence? Maybe not for everyone, but they do provide a distinctive, powerful, full-body high that makes you look like a kid who just got the biggest piece of birthday cake and doesn’t have to share.
Common edibles mistakes
A would-be spacecake astronaut bites into a fluffy, cannabis-infused cake and… nothing happens. They take another bite — or two — an hour later to realize that the original dose is kicking in, but there is no rescue shuttle on its way.
This is a frequent issue with edibles, and even experienced users can make this error. Remember that edibles take longer to work than other types of cannabis. Take your time, start small, and wait at least an hour and a half before refueling.
The most frequent blunder is forgetting to decarboxylate your marijuana before creating edibles. The cake may be tasty, but the cannabis will not make you high because it has not been decarboxylated. Here’s why.
Why decarboxylation is key
Your couch will become a lunar module if you decarboxylate weed. Decarboxylation is the conversion of THCA to THC using heat, and your sofa into a moon habitat. When you smoke cannabis, decarbing occurs rapidly, but if you consume it, you’ll need to do so first. This is an incredibly simple procedure that only takes around 30-45 minutes in the oven with some foil or a baking sheet. Place your ground cannabis on a pan in the oven for roughly 30-45 minutes at temperatures ranging from 220-245°F (105-120°C).
But make a point of cracking the window. While in space, no one can hear you scream, yet back on Earth your housemates will be able to detect the scent of decarbing marijuana emanating from inside.
How to make cannabis oil and cannabutter
Before you can launch, one more essential stage is required — preparing a cannabis infusion. Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD are fat-soluble, which means they must be consumed with a fatty substance to be metabolized by the body.
You can simply convert any dish to a cannabis recipe by using your infused fat of choice — olive oil, coconut oil, or butter — instead of the regular oil or butter.
While many individuals would claim that only butter should be used in cake, the recipe we’re showing you uses vegetable oil instead.
How to infuse vegetable oil with cannabis
Here’s what you’ll need to make some cannabis oil:
- 1 cup or around 7-14 grams of ground, decarboxylated cannabis
- 1 cup of vegetable oil
- Double-boiler, saucepan, or crockpot
- Storage container
- Cheesecloth
You may infuse your cannabis in a variety of ways. The saucepan technique is quite simple; simply heat the oil and decarboxylated cannabis in a saucepan at around 130-150°F (55-65°C) for three hours, stirring it often to prevent scorching.
Place cannabis and oil in a Crock-Pot, turn on the heat to low, and cook for three hours. If you’re using a double boiler, simply fill the bottom pan with water and add the oil; stir in the cannabis and simmer at the same temperature for three hours.
Take the skillet off the heat and let it cool with each technique. After that, strain it through a cheesecloth into a jar. Squeeze the cloth several times to ensure that all of the oil is removed.
All that remains now is to store it in a secure container, far out of the reach of any children who could be present.
Another thing to consider while making cannabis oil is the strength. If you want a more mild batch, use less cannabis — closer to 6 or 7 grams. It’s entirely up to you. Alternatively, if you’re preparing an intense batch of oil, you might half-infuse it and half-non-infused oil before using it in a recipe so that it isn’t too powerful. It all comes down to your tolerance and how strong you want the cake to be.
The cannabis Space Cake recipe
You may create your own cannabis cake from scratch, with a detailed history of your family’s lineage dating back to the Magna Carta’s drafting, or simply modify an existing recipe.
There are a variety of space cake recipes available in the cosmos, but we decided to alter this wonderful chocolate cake from Martha Stewart. She has experience in the kitchen, and as a friend and collaborator of Snoop Dogg and a former convict, we feel she may be relied upon for just about anything.
How to make chocolate Space Cake
Ingredients
- 3 cups unsweetened cocoa powder, plus more for dusting
- 3 teaspoons salt
- 6 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoon baking soda
- 1⁄4 cup cannabis-infused vegetable oil
- 11⁄2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 cups buttermilk
- 6 cups sugar
- 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 6 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 3 cups hot water
Method
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F(175°C). Grease two 8-inch cake pans with butter and flour them. Butter paper and cocoa should be spread over the bottom of each pan.
Step 2
In a mixing dish, whisk the cocoa, flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Using a mixer on low speed, combine the oil, buttermilk, vanilla, eggs, and hot water until smooth. Beat for about two minutes or until completely homogeneous.
Step 3
Remove the cakes from the oven and let them sit for 10 minutes before turning them out. Set aside to cool, then slice and serve adorned with berries or whipped cream.
Step 4
Remove the marijuana cakes from the oven and set them on wire racks to cool completely. Flip the pans over after approximately 20-30 minutes to remove the cakes, then let them cool top side up. Using a small, sharp knife, carefully cut off the top of one of the cakes.
Step 5
This is a turning point in the process. You may ice both cakes with the same frosting recipe or stack them with it, or go in a completely different direction: either eat the un-iced chocolate cakes as is or with some whipped cream or hot fudge topping, or take a huge chunk and drop it into a bowl with a big scoop of ice cream.
However, if you decide to offer the marijuana chocolate cake, remember the wise words of space cake elders: Don’t go overboard. Eat a decent-sized piece and allow an hour or so for things to take effect before eating any more.
Once the space cake kicks in, sit back and enjoy the trip, but don’t be in a hurry to come down to earth.
