Terms to Know:
Decarboxylation
Decarboxylation, or “decarb” for short, is a crucial process of heating your cannabis in order to convert THCA into THC, or CBDA into CDB. This increases the potency and effectiveness of your cannabis oil or cannabutter.
Although it’s not required, decarboxylation will result in more potent weed cookies, and we want you to have the best experience possible. Consequently, we’ve included this step in our guide. It’s really not as complicated as it may seem–we’ll walk you through everything in detail in step #2 below.
Infusion
The presence of fat is essential when infusing cannabis into cooking oil or butter because the THC compounds in marijuana are soluble in fats. Infusion is simply the process of blending your herbs into the fat source you plan to use in your recipe.
Usually, cannabutter produces better tasting weed cookies; however, butter is more likely to burn. If you are new to this process, we recommend using cannabis oil instead. Please note that the choice between butter and oil should be based on the recipe from your store-bought cookie dough mix.
Infusion can occur in many ways, some of which utilize a machine like the MagicalButter Extractor, LEVO II, or even a slow cooker. However, for this guide we will be focusing on methods that only require items commonly found in kitchens.
Pro Tip: Be patient and let the THC infusion process happen over a longer time period to make the fat more potent.
How to Make Potent Weed Cookies:
Weigh & Break Up Cannabis
The potency of your weed cookies will be largely dependent on how much herb you use and the percentage of THC in said weed. If you prefer your edibles to be less potent, using an eighth of weed per cup of oil is recommended. If this is not your first time making or consuming edibles, five grams per cup of oilshould give you a good haut. However, if you want incredibly strong weed cookies, then seven grams will get you there.
Let’s simplify that:
For those of you who like to bake without measuring first, start by making the number of weed cookies you want. For example, if your recipe makes 20 cookies and you want each one to have 10 grams of weed, then .5g of THC will be in each cookie.
Pro Tip: Ingesting weed cookies and other marijuana-infused edibles is the most effective way for the body to absorb THC. For first-time users, you can ingest far less THC than you are used to smoking or vaping while feeling the same effects, if not stronger ones.
You don’t need to grind your weed into a powder-like substance; in fact, it’s better to break the nugs into smaller, peanut-sized pieces. You’ll be able to extract the same amount of THC from the herb this way and filtering will be quicker and simpler. If you do opt to Grind your cannabis flower before beginning the infusion process, though, you’ll need to upgrade your strainer for one with much smaller holes.
Decarb Cannabis
Decarbing your cannabis is crucial for making potent weed cookies, as mentioned previously. You can start by preheating your oven to 220° degrees and placing small cannabis nugs onto a sheet of tin foil or baking tray. Once the oven is appropriately heated, put the baking tray inside for 30-40 minutes. Because this step smells more than others while baking weed cookies, you can reduce the odor by covering the baking sheet with tin foil to trap in the scent.
You’ll know the herb is done decarbonating when it’s slightly shriveled and discolored. At this point, take it out of the oven so you can start making weed cookies.
Infuse Cannabis
The process of infusing your cannabis for making weed cookies differs depending on what you have access to in your kitchen. If you cannot find a device to infuse with, a double-boiler can be set up at home using easily accessible materials such as a cooking pot, water, and a glass bowl that can be stacked on top of the pot without touching the bottom.
If you don’t own a glass mixing bowl, it’s perfectly safe to use another type of heat-resistant bowl to set up your double boiler. Just be sure to use the correct bowl size and handle with caution.
Fill the bottom pot of your double boiler 1/3 of the way with water and set it to a low boil. If there is less than 2 inches of water in the bottom pot, add more so that it doesn’t all evaporate during boiling. Keep in mind that the top bowl should not touch the water in the bottom pot when you’re finished filling it.
Add 1⅓ cups of oil or butter and your decarbed weed to the top bowl of a double boiler. Set it on the base pot, then put a lid on top or use tin foil. Allow it to simmer for three hours on low heat so that only the oil/butter stays in the bowl while any remaining weed particles are filtered out using a strainer.
Some of the oil or butter is absorbed during this process, so you should end up with 1 cup of cannabis oil or cannabutter for baking your weed cookies.
Make Dough & Bake Cookies
If a recipe calls for 1-2 eggs, 1/3 cup of water, and 1/3 cup of oil, then you will be able to make at least 3 batches of weed cookies.
Next, follow the recipe on the packaging. This will usually involve mixing together the cookie mix, eggs, water, and oil (cannabis oil or cannabutter instead of regular oil or butter), then rolling it into balls to make however many weed cookies you want.
Before you begin, preheat the oven to the recommended temperature. Once the cookies are finished baking, let them cool on a cookie tray for 10 minutes before indulging.
Enjoy your Weed Cookies!
Lastly, you can sit back and relax with the weed cookies you labored over! If you want to experience their full potency, it’s best to consume them on an empty stomach. However, if you’d prefer a more mild effet, wait until after you’ve eaten something else first. Weed cookies go great with a glass of milk–just make sure to space them out since they’ll be pretty tempting all together!
Pro Tip: On average, it takes about 45 minutes to start feeling the effects of edibles. If you are not patient, however, and consume too many weed cookies at once, there is no turning back. For best results, we recommend indulging on an empty stomach so that you can experience stronger, longer-lasting effects.
Any leftover cannabis oil or cannabutter can be kept in a mason jar inside the fridge for up to 3 months. The completed weed cookies should go into a jar or sealed storage container if you plan on eating them soon.
Weed cookies can also be frozen if you plan on gradually eating them over a longer period of time. Congratulations on your hard work, now you can safely say you are a weed cookie chef!
